We will assume you are now a new owner of a Historic Home in Oklahoma City.     Please take note that if you purchased a home in one of our 9

Historic Preservation Districts, you must follow the Guidelines for HP Zoning.    You can find the complete Guidelines at

ANY changes or additions to the outside of your home (this includes many landscaping features, retaining walls, sidewalks and fencing issues) must have an approved

Certificate of Appropriateness  approved by the Historic Preservation Commission.      You should call the HP Planning Department to learn of

the process and application procedures.

As with any home, appropriate maintenance is important, and considering the age of many historical homes (80-100 years old), this is paramount to longevity and appreciation of your home over the long haul!

Take any suggestions from your Home Inspection Reports, and monitor those yearly!    If you have a termite warranty, my best suggestion is to keep this activated each year.     Monitoring all home systems with yearly (or more) inspections, will ensure you don't have any serious issues come up, and cost even more than normal!

Issues will arise!   We had a gas leak in our basement, and it could not be located.    We had to install a new gas line into the home, almost $2000!

Historic Home owners are literally, Stewards of the homes for subsequent generations!       Such warmth and architectural detail can not be found in new construction and the appropriate maintenance of your home, will assure you excellent appreciation over the years in the home!

I will initiate a Video Series of my 5 Blog entries next week!

Happy Home Ownership!
